Let me start out by saying that it seems that if you want a story that has animals in it, they're pretty much all shifter stories. Fool's Gold is a refreshing change.
I liked the characters and I found the story to be quite interesting. To me, there was a big stumbling block in the story, that being if you didn't know much about equestrian sports, I didn't understand a lot of which the author was saying. Having a friend who was into the sport taught me about tack and dressage. The rest was over my head. A glossary of terms or footnotes would have helped.
I also found the ending to be a little abrupt, but then I'm reminded of the old adage 'leave them wanting more', and this is certainly the case. Hopefully Ms. Madison will write a sequel. I'd really like to see what happens.
I also don't understand how the title relates to the story.
All that being said, on a scale of 1 to 5 I rate Fool's Gold a 4.

Am I likely to read it again? Yes
Would I recommend it? Most definitely.
